Coast Guard rescues man from water off Watch Hill

Watch Hill — Members of Coast Guard Station New London on Tuesday night rescued a man who’d fallen into the water off Watch Hill after members of his boat’s crew were unable to pull him back on board.

According to Coast Guard officials, members of the station launched a 45-foot response boat after getting a call about the man, who was in the water about half a mile southeast of Watch Hill, about 9:30 p.m.

When they arrived about 20 minutes later, Coast Guard members found that crew members of the boat had managed to tie the man to the boat but had been unable to get him back on board.

After using multiple techniques, including a life ring and a swim platform, Coast Guard officials were able to pull the man from the water about 10:15 p.m.

Officials said the man, who had a life jacket, fell overboard while trying to help his father bring in a large striped bass.

Evaluated by Mystic fire officials, the man had no apparent injuries or medical issues despite being in the water for at least 45 minutes, members of Station New London said.
