Stonington woman twice charged with drunk driving, once with car hood up and no brakes

    This corrects an earlier version

Stonington — A local woman was charged twice within 15 hours with drunk driving this weekend, including incidents in which police said she drove down Route 1 with the hood of her car up, blocking her view, and used her emergency brake to stop her car.

Candace N. White, 30, of 252 North Water St., Apt. B, was first charged Saturday night at 10:02 p.m. with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, reckless driving, failure to drive a reasonable distance apart and driving without minimum insurance.

In that incident, police said White rear-ended another car at the intersection of Route 1 and North Main Street. Police said they found that White’s car did not have working brakes and that she had been using the parking brake to bring the car to a stop. She was later released on a $600 nonsurety bond and is slated to appear in New London Superior Court July 11.

At 2:41 p.m. on Sunday police responded to the call of a car that struck a fence at 252 North Water St., White’s residence. Police said a resident there identified White as the driver of the car that hit the fence.

Police said their investigation revealed that White had again been driving the car without the brakes, and this time with its hood completely up. Police said she was able to drive by sticking her head out of the driver’s side window to see where she was going. Police said she exhibited signs of intoxication and was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, reckless driving, driving without minimum insurance and driving an unregistered motor vehicle. She was held on a $1,000 bond and appeared in court on Tuesday.
