Norwich Public Utilities issues power alert for second straight day

Norwich — Norwich Public Utilities officials are asking residents to be smart about their electricity use as continued hot weather and the increased demand for electricity that comes with it could affect electrical infrastructure.

The power alert, which is the group's second such alert in as many days, was in effect from 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday.

According to a news release, energy conservation on hot days not only decreases the potential impact to Norwich Public Utilities' infrastructure, it also could help keep overall electric costs lower for customers throughout the year.

In the news release, General Manager John Bilda on Thursday asked customers to stay cool but in an efficient manner. “We are also asking folks to check on their neighbors, particularly the elderly or infirm, during this challenging stretch of weather.”

Officials included the following tips in their release:

    • Be smart about using an air conditioner. Only run a window unit when someone is home; NPU recommends setting a central AC system to 73 degrees.

    • Consider waiting until after 6 p.m. to use major appliances like a dishwasher or clothes dryer.

    • Minimize the use of appliances or devices that generate heat, such as computers, curling irons, hair dryers, stereos and televisions, before 6 p.m.

    • Avoid using the oven to cook and consider using a stove, microwave or an outside grill.

    • Install energy-efficient lighting that runs much cooler than traditional lighting.

    • Keep the sun out by installing window coverings to minimize the heat coming into a home.
