Fire that began in mulch damages Pawcatuck home

Stonington — Pawcatuck firefighters extinguished a fire early Wednesday morning that began in some mulch and then ignited the vinyl siding of a home at 252 Elm Ridge Road.

Fire Chief Kevin Burns said the couple inside the home were awakened by thick smoke, but were able to escape without injury.

Firefighters from Pawcatuck and Wequetequock responded at 2:58 a.m. and found flames extending from the ground to the eaves, Burns said.

He said it took firefighters about 30 minutes to get the blaze under control. He said the home sustained smoke and heat damage and will not be habitable for a few days.

Burns said the cause of the fire had not been determined and Police Capt. Todd Olson said it is not considered suspicious.

Town records show the home is owned by Paul and Karen Ciccone.
