Norwich Public Utilities issues power alert for Thursday

Norwich — As heat and humidity envelope the region, Norwich Public Utilities officials are asking residents to be wary of how much electricity they're using.

The power alert, which is the third such alert issued this year, is effective from noon to 5 p.m. Thursday.

Officials said by conserving electricity, customers will reduce strain on infrastructure and as a result could ultimately reduce their overall electricity costs.

Some of the steps listed in the power alert include:

    • Only run window units when someone is home and set central air conditioning systems to 73 degrees.

    • Consider waiting until after 6 p.m. to use major appliances such as dishwashers and dryers.

    • Minimize the use of devices that generate heat — including computers, curling irons, hair dryers, stereos and televisions — before 6 p.m.

    • Avoid using the oven to cook and consider using a stove, microwave or an outdoor grill instead.

    • Install energy-efficient lighting.

    • Keep the sun and thus the heat out by installing window coverings.
