Groton man charged in domestic incident

A Groton man was charged Monday with breaking into his girlfriend’s home and threatening her children after the woman said she wanted to end their relationship, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

Elvis Hernandez, 30, of an unspecified address in Groton City, was charged with second-degree burglary, three counts of risk of injury to a minor, second-degree threatening, disorderly conduct and third-degree criminal mischief.

The woman told police she met with Hernandez two weeks ago to talk about their relationship and said she didn’t want to date him anymore, but would still try to support him, the affidavit said.

On Aug. 14, at about 1:50 a.m., she heard a knock at the window and heard Hernandez asking her to open the front door, the affidavit said. The woman, who was on the phone with a friend at the time, said she refused and one of the children went upstairs to look out the bathroom window.

The child saw Hernandez climb through the woman’s bedroom window, the affidavit said. The child screamed and the woman grabbed a baseball bat from the kitchen and ran upstairs, the affidavit said. Hernandez told the woman he wanted to get his things, then grabbed the baseball bat and began hitting himself in the head with it, the affidavit said. The woman told police Hernandez pushed her, told the children that they were going to get beaten, grabbed money out of his wallet and threw it at her before leaving, the affidavit said.

The woman’s friend heard the incident and called police.
