Pawcatuck man flees crash, later returns and is charged with DWI

Stonington — A Pawcatuck man who police say fled the scene of a crash early Sunday morning returned a short time later and was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Maxwell C. Gilmore, 26, of 21 Noyes Ave., Pawcatuck, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, failure to drive right, evading responsibility and driving with a suspended license.

According to state court records, Gilmore is on probation for two separate convictions for reckless driving and possession of narcotics in 2015. He received suspended prison terms in those cases.

According to police, they responded to a report of a pickup truck striking a utility pole on Washington Street in Pawcatuck at 2:21 a.m.

When police arrived, they said the pickup was unoccupied but had sustained serious damage and snapped the pole in two. They said Gilmore then returned to the scene with cuts to his hands and showing signs of intoxication.

They said he denied being the driver but police said he matched the description of the driver given by witnesses and that one witness identified him as the driver. He was arrested and later released on a $600 bond and is scheduled to appear in New London Superior Court Oct. 18.
