Firefighters, contractors make quick work of Montville fire

Montville — A fire that began while contractors were updating the wall of a Massapeag Point Road home Thursday was extinguished before it got far, according to Resident State Trooper Sgt. Mark Juhola.

Juhola said the contractors had the 11:15 a.m. blaze at 14 Massapeag Point Road mostly put out before firefighters arrived on scene, but firefighters assisted in making sure it was completely out.

According to Juhola, the contractors thought they had the fire under control, but the flames had spread to the inside of the wall. No one was injured, and the burnt wood caused only minimal smoke damage, he said.

The home, which Juhola called an “old structure,” is located near the Thames River at the end of a lengthy driveway.

“We thought it was going to be a big deal because of where it is,” he said, noting the long driveway and windy conditions on the water. “The fire department did a great job. They have the tools to get in to where the fire is and the knowledge about how to put it out.”

Montville and Mohegan firefighters responded to the scene.
