New London — An overheated ventilation motor caused the evacuation of the Roland Fieldhouse at the Coast Guard Academy on Tuesday afternoon.
Tim Riegle, a duty engineer, used a fire extinguisher to quell the fire. New London Battalion Chief Tom Curcio said firefighters made sure the fire did not spread beyond the motor in the basement mechanical room.
The fire never entered the ventilation room, said Petty Officer third-class Nicole Barge.
"There was quite a bit of smoke in the basement," Curcio said.
A swimming class and badminton class were evacuated.
No injuries were reported.
