Groton — The town police department on Thursday filled one of its vacancies by promoting an eight-year veteran of the department to the rank of sergeant.

Sgt. Richard Sawyer, previously a patrol officer, has been with the department since November 2008. Over the years, he has served as a field training officer and a bike officer and has gained certification as an instructor in firearms, less lethal weapons and use of force.

Sawyer, a North Stonington resident, will remain in the Patrol Division in his new role.

Since Jan. 1, the department has lost six officers, including some to federal law enforcement agencies and others to retirement.
