5 testify about 2015 shooting death in New London

New London — The prosecution on Thursday called five people to the stand in the first day of a probable cause hearing at New London Superior Court for Shaquan Lee-Seales, who’s been charged in the fatal December 2015 shooting of Gilberto Olivencia.

Lee-Seales, 22, is facing charges of murder, first-degree reckless endangerment, illegal discharge of a firearm, carrying a pistol without a permit and first-degree robbery. He’s been held in lieu of a $1 million bond since police charged him in June.

Prosecutor Paul J. Narducci was working Thursday to prove to the court that there’s enough evidence to prosecute Lee-Seales for murder. Those called to the stand included New London police Sgt. Robert Pickett, state police Det. David Lamoureux and, by subpoena, an 18-year-old who provided police with information that helped lead them to Lee-Seales.

According to court testimony, police responded to the area of Connecticut Avenue and Grand Street just before 11 p.m. Dec. 10, 2015, for reports of shots fired. Upon arrival, they found 29-year-old Olivencia lying on the front porch of 8 Grand St., losing a large amount of blood and unable to speak about who shot him.

Olivencia was pronounced dead at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital at 12:43 a.m. on Dec. 11, 2015.

According to court testimony and an arrest warrant affidavit, the shooting was related to an earlier encounter in the city in which Lee-Seales allegedly punched, kicked and robbed a 17-year-old drug dealer who “disrespected” him.

Police said they were able to confirm that event through video surveillance and phone records.

Not long after the alleged beating, police saw and stopped the 17-year-old, who was walking down a city street with a large knife and yelling about wanting revenge. He was arrested, sent to L+M for treatment and released to the custody of his mother.

By the time of the Dec. 10, 2015, shooting, he was in the vicinity of 8 Grand St., where he said he saw Lee-Seales get out of a white SUV and point a gun toward where he and several others were standing.

The 17-year-old has since turned 18 and is the person who reluctantly recounted those events in court Thursday.

Police have said the white SUV, which is similar to the one Lee-Seales had been known to drive, and a thumbprint on a pack of cigarettes found near the crime scene also link Lee-Seales to the shooting.

Narducci said early Thursday afternoon that he intended to call city police Dets. William Pero and Richard Curcuro to the stand when court returned to session. He said two people who performed tests in the forensics laboratory would be called Friday, along with possibly two lay witnesses he preferred not to name.
