Woman arraigned for New Year's Eve stabbing over rap music in Norwich

A Norwich woman who is accused of stabbing her sister's boyfriend in the chest on New Year's Eve because she didn't like the lyrics of a rap song he was singing was arraigned Tuesday in Superior Court in Norwich.

Carolina A. Fragoza, 35, of 25 Broadway, No. 11, is charged with inflicting life-threatening injuries on the 33-year-old victim, Alreno Sebastian.

Norwich Judge John M. Newson ordered Fragoza, who was charged with first-degree assault, held in lieu of $175,000 bond and continued the case to Jan. 13, when it may be transferred to the New London court where serious felonies are tried.

According to a police report, officers were called to 156 Broadway at 10:34 p.m. Saturday for a report of a man who fell on a knife. They arrived to find Sebastian lying on the kitchen floor in an upstairs apartment with a severe chest wound. They saw a large kitchen knife, with a bloodied blade, on a nearby counter.

The victim's girlfriend and two other adults were in the apartment, along with three children, who were asleep in a bedroom, according to the report. The police were unable to interview Sebastian, who was transferred from The William W. Backus Hospital to Hartford Hospital due to the severity of his condition. A spokesman for Hartford Hospital said Tuesday that Sebastian was in fair condition.

According to the report, a parishioner of a church at 148 Broadway approached officers at the scene and said a heavyset female had just fled from the church after saying she needed a place to hide because she had stabbed someone. The man said the woman had run south on Broadway.

Another witness told police Fragoza had called her and said she had stabbed Sebastian. About 1:10 a.m., police found Fragoza sleeping on a bench in a common area in the Wauregan apartment building. She admitted to leaving the apartment on Broadway after a disagreement but denied knowledge of the stabbing.

The victim's girlfriend, who is Fragoza's sister, told police Fragoza got upset about lyrics in a rap song Sebastian was singing and stabbed him.

Fragoza suffers from drug and alcohol issues, along with depression and anxiety, according to bail commissioner Chris Manavas. She has previous convictions for possession of marijuana, use of a vehicle without the owner's permission, violation of probation and driving while her license is suspended. She has four children.
