New London — New London police have arrested a man in connection with Thursday’s robbery of the Chelsea Groton Bank branch at 1 Montauk Ave.

Less than a half-hour had passed before the man was in custody.

Anthony Council, 46, faces charges of first-degree robbery and sixth-degree larceny in the robbery at the bank that was reported at 10:47 a.m. Police records show Council was in custody at 11:15 a.m.

Police said Council entered the bank in a hooded sweatshirt and handed the teller a note and indicated he had a weapon. No weapon was shown. He left the bank with $220. After setting up a perimeter and speaking with witnesses and searching the area, police said Council was found in a nearby building.

Council lists his address as 649 Buddington Road in Groton, the address of a group home for adults with psychiatric and substance abuse issues, run by Sound Community Services.

The Chelsea Groton branch was robbed in November and the man charged in that robbery, convicted felon Anthony Rowe, also listed his address as 649 Buddington Road. Prior to his arrest, Rowe had served a prison sentence for robbing two different cab drivers in New London in 2008.

Council also has a criminal history that includes a six-year prison sentence in 2012 for robbing a man at knifepoint on State Street in New London in 2011. He was on probation for a prior robbery conviction at that time.
