Norwich man arrested after police chase in East Lyme

East Lyme — A Norwich man was arrested on multiple charges early Saturday morning after an alleged domestic assault at the Motel 6 on Flanders Road followed by an attempt to flee on Interstate 95, police said.

Abraham N. Powell, 26, of 42 South A St., Taftville, was charged with reckless driving, second-degree criminal mischief, disorderly conduct, second-degree assault, second-degree strangulation, disobeying an officer's signal, sixth-degree larceny, interfering with police and failure to appear in court.

He was held on a $75,000 cash bond and is scheduled to appear in New London Superior Court on Monday.

East Lyme police said they were called to the Motel 6 at 269 Flanders Road at 3:49 a.m. Saturday for a report of a disturbance. Upon arrival, police said the suspect was seen fleeing in a motor vehicle. As police attempted to stop the vehicle, Powell allegedly left the roadway, drove down the entrance to the motel and onto Flanders Road to I-95 northbound at Exit 74. Police pursued the vehicle for about three miles before Powell pulled over near the Interstate 395 interchange.
