New London — Police on Monday afternoon arrested a convicted felon they said stole multiple firearms and hundreds of rounds of ammunition from Stonington earlier this week.

According to police, early Monday a resident reported missing to Stonington police two pistols, one assault rifle, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, five high-capacity rifle magazines and 15 high-capacity pistol magazines. Police said the guns and ammunition were taken from a vehicle parked outside a residence.

City police said they, working with the Statewide Narcotics Task Force – East, developed David Johnson, 28, of 357 Bayonet St. as a suspect.

Police said they located Johnson about 4 p.m. Monday near 290 Broad St. and stopped the vehicle he was in. According to police, officers found two of the three reported stolen firearms “in close proximity” to Johnson during the stop. Police said they also located hundreds of rounds of ammunition and several high-capacity magazines.

Police and members of the narcotics task force then executed a search-and-seizure warrant at 357 Bayonet St. Police said they found the third stolen firearm during that search.

Police on Monday evening charged Johnson with three counts of possession of a stolen firearm, three counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of ammunition by a convicted felon, possession of an assault weapon and two counts of risk of injury to a minor.

Police said Johnson, who has been convicted of felonies in multiple states, is being held on $200,000 cash surety bond.

    The investigation is ongoing.
