East Lyme — A fire, which started in a bedroom in an apartment building at 46 East Pattagansett Road in Niantic, spread and burned through an apartment Friday evening.

No one was injured, though a boy was in the bedroom at the time and witnessed the fire, said Dick Morris, the East Lyme fire marshal. His office was investigating the fire, but officials believe the witness's account, Morris added.

The fire, which was called in at 6:10 p.m., caused smoke damage to the surrounding apartments on the ground floor and above.

Morris estimated that there were roughly 10 people, including children, displaced by the fire, and said he was working with the American Red Cross on assisting them. Red Cross, in a news release issued later Friday night, said the agency was helping 11 people — eight adults and three children — in connection with the fire.

Niantic Fire Department, Flanders Fire Department and a crew from Old Saybrook all responded.
