Groton — Several local and state law enforcement agencies joined forces on Wednesday to arrest a Westerly man who allegedly stabbed another man in the abdomen last month.

Dominic Beltran, 21, of Westerly was charged with first-degree assault, first-degree burglary and criminal violation of a protective order.

Groton City police said they learned from Westerly police Wednesday afternoon that Beltran was at the Budget Inn in North Stonington. They headed toward the inn and met Westerly police and state troopers there.

Detectives learned upon arrival that Beltran had fled on foot toward the Pilot Truck Stop, 273 Clarks Falls Road.

Police said the agencies on scene, along with a Stonington police K-9 unit, conducted a search of the area and found Beltran in a small wooded area behind the truck stop.

Beltran, whom police arrested without incident, was held on a $500,000 bond and was due in New London Superior Court on Thursday.

Police said Beltran’s charges stemmed from a domestic violence dispute that occurred Feb. 5. On that day, Beltran allegedly broke into the home of his former girlfriend and waited for her to return. When she did, Beltran allegedly stabbed the man who was with her in the abdomen.

It wasn’t immediately clear how serious the man’s injuries were.

Police said there was a protective order on Beltran at the time with his former girlfriend listed as the protected party.
