Fire displaces residents of Norwich group home

Norwich — A building at a state-run group home campus was evacuated and residents displaced Thursday because of a fire in a second-floor room.

The East Great Plain Fire Department was called to 401 W. Thames St., cottage No. 6, about 5:45 p.m. for reports of a fire.

Deputy Fire Chief Rich Huntley said the fire was extinguished, but parts of the building suffered fire, smoke and/or water damage. The water damage was in part due to the building’s sprinkler system. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by the state Fire Marshal’s Office. Huntley said the residents of the building were relocated to a different facility on the same campus.
