Norwich — Police on Monday arrested a city man they said sold heroin to a man shortly before that man overdosed and died.

Jonathan M. Owens, 29, of 29 Lambert Drive was charged with driving while using a handheld device, possession of heroin, possession of heroin with intent to sell and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police said they stopped him on Otrobando Avenue about 4:15 p.m. because their investigation into the overdose death of a man had led them to Owens. Police said Owens allegedly sold heroin to the man prior to the man's morning death. They didn't specify who the man was or when he died and said they would not release more details at this time because they expect to make more arrests.

According to police, Owens had about 2.5 grams of suspected heroin and fentanyl with him when they pulled him over.

Police said they then obtained a warrant and searched Owens’ residence, which they said yielded two handguns, ammunition, body armor, heroin, packaging materials, cellphones, a laptop and a digital scale.

Owens, held on a $250,000 cash surety bond, was due in Norwich Superior Court on Tuesday.
