New London firefighters handle 2 ODs, fire on busy Tuesday night

New London — Tuesday brought a busy night for city firefighters, who responded to two suspected overdoses, several medical calls and a fire in the span of about three hours.

According to fire officials, the first overdose call came in from the New London Homeless Hospitality Center about 6:30 p.m. Officials said the victim, a 40-year-old man, became conscious and admitted to having used K2, or synthetic marijuana. He was taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital.

At 9 p.m., firefighters responded to Union Station, where two people were unconscious. The first, a 29-year-old man, was drunk, officials said. Responders administered Narcan to the other, a 26-year-old man who likely was suffering an opioid overdose and became conscious after receiving the overdose-reversal drug. Crews took both men to L + M. Available information didn't indicate the men were there together, officials said.

The fire at 73 Riverview Ave. was reported at 9:22 p.m., as some members of the city department still were tending to the overdose victim. The fire, which firefighters knocked down in about 10 minutes, left a third-floor apartment with smoke and fire damage.

Battalion Chief Thomas Curcio on Tuesday said a police officer who evacuated the residents and shut the door to the room where the fire was deserves credit for the fact the flames didn’t spread.

Members of the American Red Cross said they're assisting two families consisting of three adults and one child as a result of the fire.

Officials had not yet released a cause of the blaze.
