Norwich Free Academy student arrested for allegedly threatening social media post

Norwich — An 18-year-old Norwich Free Academy student was arrested on a breach of peace charge Friday following a report of an online threat shared on social media, police said.

James Noel, of 86 Ross Hill Road, Lisbon, was charged with second-degree breach of peace Friday. He was released on a $1,000 nonsurety bond and is scheduled to appear April 20 in Norwich Superior Court.

Norwich police Sgt. Michael McKinney said Noel allegedly posted a video of a room at NFA on the social media site Snapchat with the message “At the shooting range.” The video was seen by a student at Woodstock Academy, who alerted safety officers at that school, who in turn notified NFA campus security officers, who then called Norwich police at 9:30 a.m. Friday to investigate.

Noel was identified and detained in the incident, and McKinney said there was no real threat to NFA. McKinney characterized the incident as a “young man doing a stupid thing” but said authorities took the threat seriously.

“It was enough to make an arrest, because it was alarming to others,” McKinney said.

NFA sent out a messenger notification Friday morning and posted it on the school website stating: “This morning, Norwich Free Academy’s Campus Safety Department became aware of threatening content shared on Social Media by an NFA student. The matter was referred to the Norwich Police Department. The student has been detained, and NPD is investigating the incident.”
