New London health service provider warns of email breach

New London — Sound Community Services Inc. is notifying certain current and former patients of a recent event involving unauthorized access to a Sound employee email account.

The agency detected suspicious activity in an employee’s email account on Jan. 13 and immediately launched an investigation, determining that an unknown actor had gained access to the account on or about Jan. 12. Sound has found no evidence that any patient information was accessed or misused as a result of the breach, according to an agency news statement.

During its investigation, Sound on April 18 identified individuals with information potentially accessible to the unknown actor. This information includes names and client numbers. In addition, referral information relating to one individual also potentially was accessible.

Affected individuals will receive additional background on the breach and will be offered access to two years of free identity-protection services. They are encouraged to review their accounts, explanations of benefits and credit reports, and should report any suspicious activity to the affiliated institutions immediately.

Sound also is notifying relevant federal and state regulators of the breach. The agency says it takes the security of information very seriously and is taking steps to help ensure that a similar situation does not occur again.
