Waterford — Police on Friday night will begin conducting traffic sobriety patrols and occasional checkpoints in an effort to keep the roads safe during Memorial Day weekend.
The state Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have made the crackdown possible.
State police over the next several days also will have extra patrols roaming Connecticut's highways and interstates. Their routes will take them through just about every southeastern Connecticut municipality.
Police are reminding residents to drive safely and responsibly.
