    4 charged with using fake checks at local Stop and Shop stores

    East Lyme — East Lyme and Waterford police last week charged four New York residents with using counterfeit traveler’s checks to purchase gift cards at area Stop and Shop stores.

    According to police, the group first hit the Niantic store on Flanders Road and then headed to the Waterford store on Boston Post Road.

    When Waterford officers arrived at the store in their town, they quickly detained two women suspected in the thefts.

    Waterford police then reached out to East Lyme police.

    East Lyme police said the suspects used eight $100 traveler’s checks at the Niantic store.

    Charged were Michael Aquino, 18, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; Josue DeLeon, 30, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; Ellen Irizarri, 19, of Bronx, N.Y., and Tiasia Anacacy, 18, of Bronx, N.Y.

    Court records show Aquino, held on $45,000 in bonds, is facing six counts of first-degree forgery and two counts of conspiracy to commit fifth-degree larceny.

    Irizarri, held on $26,000 in bonds, is facing five counts of conspiracy to commit first-degree forgery, first-degree forgery, criminal attempt to commit fifth-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit fifth-degree larceny.

    Deleon, held on $150,000 in bonds, is facing six counts of first-degree forgery and two counts of conspiracy to commit fifth-degree larceny.

    Anacacy, held on $26,000 in bonds, is facing five counts of conspiracy to commit first-degree forgery, first-degree forgery, criminal attempt to commit fifth-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit fifth-degree larceny.

    Irizarri, Deleon and Anacacy are next due in New London Superior Court on June 30. Aquino is scheduled to appear June 20 in the same court.
