New London attorney charged with assault in Niantic

Attorney Anthony C. Basilica, who practices criminal defense law in New London with his father, was arrested Saturday in East Lyme after an altercation with a man outside the Black Sheep restaurant on Main Street.

Basilica, 27, of 54 Gardner Ave. was charged with second-degree assault with intent to cause serious physical injury and second-degree breach of peace following the 3:38 p.m. incident.

A police report was not available Tuesday.

According to a summary released by state police, Basilica suffered a "fat lip" as a result of the altercation. He was taken into custody without incident, processed at Troop E and released on a nonsurety bond. He is due in New London Superior court on July 7.

The other individual, a 20-year-old man who was not identified by police, suffered facial injuries, according to witnesses, and was taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital.

Police said their investigation is continuing.

Basilica, a New London native, has since last year been practicing law in New London with his father, Anthony R. Basilica, a prominent defense attorney in the area.

Reached by phone Tuesday, the father said only, "We look forward to our day in court."

It is unclear whether Basilica's case will be heard at G.A. 10, where both father and son often represent clients in criminal cases and are well known by staff.

New London State's Attorney Michael L. Regan said he couldn't comment on a pending case, but in general, if there is a conflict of interest or the appearance of a conflict, a prosecutor from the Chief State's Attorney's office might take a case or it might be transferred to another judicial district where there would be no appearance of a conflict. He said his office would be consulting with Judge Hillary B. Strackbein, chief administrative judge for the district.
