Stonington man dies after getting caught in current

A Stonington man died Tuesday after he dove off a boat anchored near Plum Island and got caught in a current, according to Southold Town police.

Harold T. Calkins, 63, is the deceased.

According to police, Calkins’ wife contacted the U.S. Coast Guard about 12:45 p.m. when she realized her husband was struggling to make it back to the boat.

Responders transported him to Eastern Long Island Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said Southold detectives and the Suffolk County Medical Examiners Office are investigating but do not consider the matter to be criminal.

Employees of General Dynamics Electric Boat, where Calkins was a ship manager, offered their sincere condolences to his family Thursday and said they "recognize and are grateful for his contributions to our company."
