    Man killed in Ledyard crash IDed

    Ledyard — A father was killed and his son badly injured in a one-car crash Saturday morning on Shewville Road.

    Police said the accident occurred at 9:47 a.m. in the area of 855 Shewville Road, where a vehicle traveled off the southbound travel lane and into a tree.

    The operator, Robert Burns, 79, of Aiki Farms, 769 Shewville Road, was pronounced dead at the scene, Sgt. Craig Getter of the Ledyard police confirmed Saturday evening.

    Emergency medical services personnel from both Ledyard and Mashantucket determined that the driver, the father, was deceased at the scene. The 17-year-old son, who was the lone other occupant, initially was taken for treatment at The William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich and later flown by Life Star helicopter to Hartford Hospital in serious condition. An update on his condition was not available late Saturday evening.

    Ledyard police and the Southeastern Connecticut Regional Traffic Unit are investigating the cause of the crash. Anyone with information is asked to contact Ledyard Officer Troy Johnson at (860) 464-9416.
