East Lyme police charge Colchester man involved in June altercation with attorney

East Lyme — Town police on Wednesday arrested a Colchester man who was involved in an altercation with New London attorney Anthony C. Basilica on June 24.

Joshua W. Taylor, 21, of 272 Prospect Hill Road, turned himself in after learning there was a warrant for his arrest, according to police. He was charged with third-degree assault and breach of peace. He was released on a $500 nonsurety bond and is due to appear Aug. 16 at the Geographical Area 10 courthouse in New London.

The arrest warrant affidavit in the case was not immediately available.

In an earlier report, police said that Basilica, 27, of 54 Gardner Ave., New London, suffered a "fat lip" as a result of the altercation outside the Black Sheep restaurant on Main Street. Taylor suffered facial injuries, according to witnesses, and was taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital.

Basilica, who practices criminal law with his father in New London, was charged with second-degree assault with intent to cause serious physical injury and second-degree breach of peace. His case has been transferred to the Geographical Area 15 courthouse in New Britain, where he doesn't practice law, to avoid any appearances of a conflict of interest. He has retained New Haven attorney William F. Dow III and is due in court on Aug. 22.
