State police to kick off Labor Day weekend enforcement

Beginning Friday, state police will dispatch extra patrols to focus on finding those who are driving while intoxicated, speeding, not wearing their seat belts or are otherwise distracted.

As part of the enforcement, Troop K will be conducting a sobriety checkpoint in Colchester on Sunday evening. Roving patrols from troops E, F and K also will be out on state routes and interstate highways in southeastern Connecticut through the duration of the Labor Day holiday weekend.

Police will be using both traditional and nontraditional vehicles to do this work.

Police in a news release said more than 35 million people are expected to travel this weekend. They urged those who plan to drink alcohol to establish a designated driver prior to the festivities.

“There are no second chances for first-time offenders,” police wrote in the release, explaining that even first-time offenders can end up with ignition interlock devices.

During this holiday weekend last year, police issued 1,699 tickets for speeding, 165 for seat belt violations and 3,552 for all moving violations. They additionally arrested 51 people for driving under the influence. There were 283 crashes over the extended weekend. None was fatal.
