State police recognize Eastern District troopers with service awards

The Connecticut State Police honored the service of several troopers in the Eastern District at a ceremony Wednesday in Meriden, according to a news release.

Troopers and dispatchers within Troops C, D, E, and K were recognized for their exceptional service and dedication, with awards including the Medal of Bravery, the Unit Citation and the Trooper James W. Lambert Award.

From Troop E in Montville, Trooper 1st Class Joshua Chivers, Trooper 1st Class David Tretter and the Eastern District Major Crime Squad received awards.

Trooper Chivers received the Medal for Lifesaving for a call of an unconscious woman in a car crash on Interstate 395 in Waterford in December 2016. When she had no pulse, Chivers pulled the woman from the wreckage and performed CPR and other care until emergency medical personnel showed up. The woman was transported to a local hospital and recovered, and Chivers was credited with saving her life.

Trooper Tretter received the Medal for Outstanding Service for his work on car vandalism in Old Lyme in January 2017. After receiving several reports of vandalism and criminal mischief at the high school and throughout town, he found equipment used by the suspects. This led to a critical interview and confession, resulting in 16 adult arrest warrants and 29 juvenile arrest warrants for five people involved in 16 vandalism incidents.

Detectives with the Eastern District Major Crime Squad received the Unit Citation Award for their work in the murder case of Anthony Hamlin, who was found beaten to death in Ledyard in January 2006. The case had turned into a cold case until September 2016, when detectives found information linking two new suspects to Hamlin's death and obtained confessions from them, leading to two first-degree manslaughter convictions.
