Accident scene on Gold Star Bridge is cleared

Groton — The traffic jam approaching the Gold Star Bridge has cleared.

A three-car crash that happened in the middle of an active work zone had led to more than two miles of delays during the Wednesday morning commute, according to the state Department of Transportation.

The wreck, which happened about 7:15 a.m. on the southbound side of the Gold Star Memorial Bridge, forced crews to close the right and center lanes of a bridge already operating with less capacity than usual because of construction.

Responders temporarily had to close all three lanes to allow wreckers to remove the involved vehicles, which only led to more backup.

According to an accident report, one car was slowing for traffic in the far right lane of three when a second car swerved to the left to avoid hitting it. The second car struck the first car on the right rear despite the effort. As the first car spun out from the impact, a third car struck it from behind.

    No injuries were reported.
