New London murder trial delayed a second time due to juror issue

The first day of testimony in Shaquan Lee-Seales' murder trial in New London Superior Court was postponed for a second day Friday after a juror notified the court that he had been called out of the country on business.

The man was dismissed, and jury selection resumed before Judge Barbara Bailey Jongbloed. The trial is expected to go forward Tuesday with a full panel of 12 regular jurors and four alternates.

On Thursday, the trial had been delayed by the dismissal of two jurors who approached court officials with concerns about serving. A teacher at a local school was relieved from service after she informed a court officer that students had made statements to her about the case. A man was dismissed after he told the court he was having problems with the concept, explained during jury selection, of having to convict somebody, if necessary, based on circumstantial evidence.

Lee-Seales, 23, of New London is charged with fatally shooting Gilberto Olivencia on Grand Street on Dec. 10, 2015. He has pleaded not guilty. In taking his case to trial, he rejected an offer from the state to plead guilty in exchange for a 35-year prison sentence.
