East Lyme — A Niantic man is facing theft-related charges after police said a resident caught him in the act of burglarizing a vehicle.

Police said Robert Casale, 36, of 42 Indian Rock Road, Niantic, was charged in connection with the incident.

According to police, a resident called 911 Saturday to report that they had seen and confronted a man rummaging through a vehicle at 166 W. Main St. According to police, the man exited the vehicle when confronted and walked toward a residence on Indian Rock Road.

Police said the caller stayed on the line with dispatchers and followed the man on foot until police arrived. Police said officers recovered various stolen items from the Indian Rock Road residence and then placed Casale under arrest.

It wasn't immediately clear whether the residence Casale allegedly walked to was his own.

Casale was released on a $5,000 nonsurety bond and is due in New London Superior Court Feb. 5.
