Police: Mohegan Sun patrons helped stop would-be purse thief

Mohegan — A Westerly man is facing charges after police said he snatched a purse in the Casino of the Sky earlier this month and attempted to flee.

Simon DeAngelis, 18, was charged Feb. 10 with second-degree robbery, third-degree assault on an elderly person and sixth-degree larceny.

According to police, DeAngelis and another person worked together to steal the purse and then took off running. Police said three casino patrons took chase and helped recover the purse as officers responded to the incident, which had spilled into a nearby garage.

According to police, officers apprehended DeAngelis on site, but his alleged partner got away. Police said they expect to make a second arrest in the case.

Released on a $5,000 surety bond, DeAngelis is due Thursday in Norwich Superior Court.
