Brush fire burns area of Bates Woods in New London

New London – City firefighters, with help from Waterford firefighters, extinguished a wind-driven brush fire Monday that scorched an area in Bates Woods Park that was described as the size of two football fields.

New London Battalion Chief Tom Curcio said the fire was reported about 3:35 p.m. at 112 Chester St. and it took about two hours to extinguish completely. He described the area of the fire as the the old city dump, now covered in underbrush and trees.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Curcio said the city used two engines and a ladder truck at the fire with aid from two brush trucks from Waterford.
