    Pierre-Paul injures hand with fireworks

Since March, Jason Pierre-Paul, the New York Giants’ best defensive player, has declined to sign the one-year contract offered by the Giants when they designated him as their franchise player. Pierre-Paul has instead been hoping for a long-term deal.

Those negotiations, and Pierre-Paul’s future with the Giants, were muddled Sunday in light of reports that Pierre-Paul was in the intensive care unit of a Florida hospital after injuring one of his hands in a fireworks accident Saturday night.

Several of Pierre-Paul’s teammates confirmed multiple news reports that Pierre-Paul, 26, was at Broward Health North in Deerfield Beach, Florida, receiving treatment for injuries that apparently occurred as Pierre-Paul was helping light Fourth of July fireworks in the Miami area.

The extent of Pierre-Paul’s injuries was not known. Giants training camp will open at the end of July.

Pierre-Paul, a defensive end, has been lobbying for a new multiyear contract beyond the $14.8 million the Giants agreed to pay him this season as the team’s franchise player.

He has refused to sign the franchise-player tender offer and is technically not under contract with the team, although it retains his rights.

Pierre-Paul has stayed away from the team’s offseason workouts and its spring veteran minicamp, a move that could be viewed as a way to pressure the Giants into a long-term deal. It is also a way to avoid injury; any physical restriction could complicate the contract negotiations.

The Giants could withdraw their franchise player designation, although that would make Pierre-Paul an unrestricted free agent.

If Pierre-Paul signs the franchise tag offer, his salary will represent more than 10 percent of the team’s salary-cap limit for 2015. Pierre-Paul would be an unrestricted free agent in 2016.

Nagging injuries limited Pierre-Paul in 2012 and 2013, when his sack totals dropped well below the 16 1/2 he registered in 2011. He also had back surgery in 2013. Pierre-Paul bounced back last season, making 77 tackles and recording 12 1/2 sacks.
