    Orlovsky Signs With Rams

Dan Orlovsky is headed to Los Angeles to tutor another young quarterback.

Orlovsky, UConn's all-time leader in every major passing category, will extend his NFL career to a 13th season. He has signed with the Rams, the team announced Thursday, and join a position group led by Jared Goff, 22, the No. 1 overall selection in the 2016 draft.

Orlovsky, 33, of Shelton, spent the past three seasons with the Lions, where he was a positive practice and meeting-room presence for starter Matthew Stafford.

Orlovsky returned to UConn this spring to earn his degree and serve as a student assistant coach under Randy Edsall, who coached Orlovsky in 2001-04. He hadn't been on campus in about seven years, since Edsall's first stint as UConn coach.

Orlovsky, a face of the UConn program and among the most important recruits in Huskies history, set records that still stand total offense (10,421 yards), plays (1,710), passing attempts (1,567), completions (916), passing yards (10,706), touchdown passes (84), interceptions (51) and passing yards per game (232.7).

He was a fifth-round draft pick of the Lions in 2005. He played for the Texans, Colts and Bucs before returning to Detroit in 2014.

A career back-up, Orlovsky has appeared in 27 NFL games, starting 12. He is 298 of 512 for 3,132 yards, 15 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

Orlovsky and his wife, Tiffany, have four young children, including triplets born in 2011. He expressed an interest in playing as long as possible, and will entertain the idea of coaching after retiring.

"I've played for a dozen years and it's been amazing," Orlovsky said in April. "I've been part of a lot of cool stuff. I haven't bought sneakers in 16 years and I haven't bought Gatorade since I was 10. It's been awesome. … I've really taken pride in, and appreciated, the role I've had. Someone asked me if I would ever be a quarterback coach. Well, it's kind of what I've done the last couple years. It's a unique skill, and that's why there's not a lot of us, guys that can play without getting a lot of reps."
