In honor of the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 and the writing of "The Star Spangled Banner," OpSail2012CT brings 22 vessels into New London Harbor, and the city adds some local flavor with Sailfest and its fireworks over the Thames.
The War of 1812 in CT: A Bicentennial Exhibit
Five museums and historical societies in the region have collaborated on an exhibition to commemorate the bicentennial of the War of 1812. The exhibit is at the Lyman Allyn Art Museum, 625 Williams St., New London, from July 6, 2012 through December.
With artifacts from the Stonington Historical Society, Mystic Seaport, the New London County Historical Society, the New London Maritime Society and the Lyman Allyn, as well as items from other museums and private collections, the exhibit shares stories of the war's local impact.
Artifacts such as the American flag that flew over the defenders in Stonington will be featured. An accompanying book, "The Rockets' Red Glare," includes images from the exhibit as well as essays on the war through the lens of Connecticut's experience. For more visit http://warof1812ct.org.
