DEEP schedules second public session for new state park at Seaside in Waterford

Waterford — As part of its effort to gather public comment and input in planning for a new state park at Seaside, the state’s planning team has posted an online survey seeking public input on the project, in addition to scheduling another in a series of public open houses.

The online survey can be found on the Seaside State Park Planning Process webpage: www.ct.gov/deep/seaside.

The survey seeks public comment on various options for use of the property — which was once a state sanatorium for children with tuberculosis — as a state park. The survey feedback will help inform the master planning process and ensure the broadest participation by various user groups, the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said in a news release Wednesday.

The next open house will be held at 6:30 p.m. March 25 at Waterford Town Hall.

Representatives of the state Office of Policy and Management and the departments of Energy and Environmental Protection and Administrative Services will be at the meeting, in addition to Sasaki Associates and Oak Park Architects, a Connecticut firm selected to assist with a master planning process for the park.

The project team will give a short presentation on the site, buildings and market analysis conducted so far. Its members also will report on the input they have received from stakeholders and the general public, as well as scenarios or options under consideration. After that there will be an opportunity for one-on-one conversations between the members of the community, state officials and the design team in an open-house format.

“As we move forward in the planning process for Seaside State Park, we look forward to hearing comments and suggestions from the public on what recreational opportunities people would like to have available,” said Susan Whalen, DEEP deputy commissioner. “This is the third in a series of public meetings and we strongly encourage attendance at these meetings to learn about project updates and the future of Seaside State Park.”
