Feds award $10M to plan new Bridgeport rail station

Bridgeport — The federal government is awarding $10 million for the planning of a new rail station in Bridgeport.

The new station serving Metro-North and Amtrak trains would be built on Barnum Avenue in a low-income area of Connecticut's biggest city.

The money for planning a second rail station in Bridgeport comes from a competitive Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery program.

On Monday officials including the U.S. Federal Railroad Administration administrator and Connecticut's two U.S. senators are gathering at the proposed site of the new station to discuss the grant, the anticipated benefits and possible timetables for the station.
