Connecticut GOP offers budget ideas, no social service cuts

Hartford — Republican legislative leaders are offering ideas on how to close Connecticut's budget gap and ways to make structural changes for the long term.

The General Assembly's minority party presented its concepts Thursday behind closed doors to Democratic legislative leaders and Democratic Gov. Dannel P. Malloy. No details were provided, but Senate Minority Leader Len Fasano said social services cuts were not proposed. Changes affecting state employees were suggested.

Lawmakers and Malloy are trying to reach agreement on how to reduce an estimated shortfall of $350 million to $370 million in the $20 billion budget. A special legislative session could be scheduled for December.

House Democrats previously suggested a 2.5-percent across-the-board budget reduction. A more detailed Democratic plan is expected in the coming days.
