Connecticut reports 1st human case of West Nile virus this season

NEW HAVEN (AP) — Connecticut health officials say a New Haven resident is the state's first human case of West Nile virus this season.

The state Department of Public Health said Friday the resident between the age of 50 and 59 became ill during the last week of August and had been hospitalized with high fever, dehydration and confusion. Lab tests confirmed the presence of the virus in the patient's cerebrospinal fluid.

Officials say there is "no reason to panic" and urge residents to take normal precautions.

Dr. Philip Armstrong, of the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment station, says the state continues to have weather conditions that are favorable for the mosquitoes that transmit West Nile virus. Mosquitoes that tested positive for the virus were identified last month.
