Rhode Island first responders rescue dog who fell through ice patch

EAST GREENWICH, R.I. (AP) — First responders in Rhode Island put their live-saving skills to the test over the weekend, rescuing a dog that fell into icy water at a park.

East Greenwich officials responded to the scene at Scalloptown Park, where Bethany Verret says her one-year-old dog Archie got trapped after falling through thin ice. WPRI-TV reports Verret says Archie must have gotten caught up chasing after a bird, and didn't realize there was water underneath the ice.

Fire officials say Verret was right to not attempt to rescue Archie on her own.

She says she and her family are thankful for the safe return of their pet.

Fire officials are warning everyone to stay clear of ice on water.
