Fentanyl discovery leads to hazmat response in Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A hazardous materials team on Tuesday was called to a Rhode Island home where officers discovered a powdered substance containing fentanyl while responding to a sudden death.

Providence Police Lt. Mike Figueiredo says officers found the substance sitting on a kitchen table in the third floor of the home Monday. Investigators sent a sample of the substance to the National Guard for testing, and results indicated trace amounts of the powerful synthetic opioid.

The Providence Fire Department evacuated families from the first two floors of the home Tuesday, and a hazmat team confiscated the substance.

Officials say the substance will be sent to the state Department of Health for further testing.

The identity and cause of death of the person that led to the initial response has not been released.
