Twelve-year-old tiger to depart Bridgeport zoo

BRIDGEPORT (AP) — An Amur Tiger at the Beardsley Zoo in Bridgeport is leaving this weekend for a new permanent home.

The 12-year-old tiger named Petya has been in Connecticut for three years since it came from the Indianapolis Zoo. The animals live primarily in southeast Russia and generally live in captivity for up to 22 years.

Amur Tigers, once called Siberian tigers, are endangered in the wild. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums oversees transfers like Petya's in hopes of promoting successful breeding. Petya fathered two cubs that were born at Beardsley last year.

A zoo spokeswoman said Petya is going to another zoo in the Midwest whose name has not yet been announced.
