Rep. Rosa DeLauro Joins Obama On Historic Cuba Trip

Rep. Rosa DeLauro will be part of President Barack Obama's historic trip to Cuba next week.

DeLauro, a Democrat who was first elected in 1990, will join Obama on the March 20-22 trip. It's the first time a U.S. president has traveled to Cuba since Calvin Coolidge in 1928.

On Tuesday, the White House announced new rules for U.S.-Cuban relations, allowing Americans to travel to the country on their own if they are visiting the island nation to learn about its people and culture. The White House has eased bans on trade and travel to Cuba over the past year.

"These reforms will help to boost American exports and expand business relations with Cuba," DeLauro said in a statement. "The United States’ Cuba policy is decades out-of-date and it is clear that the best way to bring democratic change is through economic participation and inclusion. Congress should follow the President’s lead and end the Cuban embargo."

Also traveling to Cuba will be 21 journalism students from Central Connecticut State University. Students from the school have made several trips to Cuba in the past to report on the country and meet with major media organizations there.

DeLauro is part of the Cuba Working Group, a bipartisan group of lawmakers working on improving U.S.-Cuba relations.
