U.S. Coast Guard transports sick man from Block Island

NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard says it helped transport a sick 35-year-old man from Block Island to the mainland amid thick fog after the last ferry for the night had run.

The Providence Journal reports the Block Island Medical Center contacted the Coast Guard around 6:30 p.m. Friday about a patient in need of treatment.

A crew from Point Judith arrived at the island around 8:15 with two Narragansett emergency medical technicians aboard.

The patient arrived at the mainland by 10:45 and rescue crews took him to South County Hospital for suspected internal bleeding.

Petty Officer 3rd Class William Holz says the boat pushed through thick fog with visibility limited to 50 yards.

The patient's identity hasn't been released. His condition wasn't immediately known.
