Trout stocked for opening day on Saturday

Rivers, streams and ponds are stocked for Opening Day of the Trout Fishing Season Saturday, the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection announced Thursday.

Approximately 371,000 trout have been released this spring into 100 lakes and ponds and nearly 170 rivers and streams and are awaiting Opening Day anglers, DEEP said in a news release. DEEP’s spring trout stocking effort began in February and will continue through mid-May. When the spring stockings are completed, DEEP expects to have stocked approximately 600,000 trout.

Among the best places for families to fish on Opening Day are the 11 designated Trout Parks, including Day Pond State Park in Colchester and Mohegan Park Pond in Norwich, DEEP said.

“Trout parks are easily accessible, have picnic areas and other amenities nearby, and are stocked frequently so that there are plenty of trout for children, families, and novice anglers to catch,” said Bill Hyatt, chief of DEEP’s Bureau of Natural Resources.
