USS Hartford returns to Connecticut from Arctic mission

GROTON (AP) — A Navy attack submarine has returned to its Connecticut homeport following a mission that took it to the Arctic.

The USS Hartford, a Los Angeles-class submarine, and another attack submarine out of San Diego, California, spent about five weeks on the mission known as Ice Exercise 2016.

The Navy says the periodic operations in the Arctic help sailors maintain a working knowledge of a region that is different from any other ocean in the world.

U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy says he was excited to welcome the submarine back to Naval Submarine Base New London on Friday. The Connecticut Democrat spent a weekend on board the submarine during the mission last month.
