Springfield heroin trafficker sentenced to serve 9-10 years

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — A 53-year-old native of the Dominican Republic who had been living illegally in Springfield has been sentenced to serve between nine and 10 years behind bars for trafficking heroin.

The Republican newspaper reports Orlando Genao was sentenced Monday in Hampden Superior Court after striking a deal with prosecutors that allowed him to plead guilty to trafficking between 100 and 200 grams of heroin.

Genao was initially charged with trafficking more than 200 grams of the drug, which carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 12 years. Assistant District Attorney Amy Wilson says police found more than 500 grams of heroin at Genao's Oak Grove Avenue apartment in October 2014.

Police say Genao was living illegally in the country when he was arrested. He will serve his time before being deported.
